She was the last one named
The Makings of of Luka Erebi #3
When I was creating characters, I was fleshing out almost everyone except for the main character herself. She was actually the last person to be named.
I came into this project knowing that Wren’s name started with a W because she was going to be a wasp. Vespula was one of the wasp family scientific name. Wren Vespula rolled right off the tongue. She was the one with the stinger.
While the main character would be… not that. I wanted her character to be someone who’s scared, but brave when the situation calls for it. Like Courage, the cowardly dog.
She’d get in many conflicts, but not because she’s a damsel in distress. She just finds herself in it. Whether it’s through her own actions or others.
I knew what her character was… and I had no name or bug type to go with it. I did think nonchalantly of a moth before forgetting about it.
Then, during the first week of worldbuilding, I woke up to a moth flying around in my room. I didn’t know how it got in, but it was in.
I think it was a sign.
Moths are drawn to the light, they literally cannot stop themselves from being drawn in. Because of this, they can orbit of a light until they get tired and die.
Similar to how our main character would find herself taking pictures of insects, even when she’s got insectophobia.
So, a moth it was. It was easy finding the last name and then the first name after that.
I chose the name Luka because it reminded me of Luca, the city in FFX where you play blitzball. You’ll notice I enjoy naming a lot of things after my favorite games.
Even Ari, the character introduced in chapter 2, is from Fields of Mistria. Of course, Ari Weaver just sounds right, but I was thinking about the default name in Fields of Mistria1.
Everything seemed to tie together for Luka Erebi. She, like a moth, was drawn to danger even if she didn’t want to. She even has a terrible sense of danger. And because of that, it’s going to cause her lots of troubles.
The default name is Ari in Fields of Mistria.
